Historically, Clary Sage seeds were believed to be good for eye health, even improving vision; its name also means "bright eye". Clary Sage essential oil has a reputation for being a favorite with women, who may find it helpful for relieving hormone-related complaints, especially mood-related issues. It has earned the nickname "The Woman’s Oil," although Clary Sage’s properties are beneficial for everyone.
Clary Sage is a relaxant. It’s helpful for aiding restful sleep and can even work to soothe headaches, with uplifting qualities which enhance the mood.
Its anti-spasmodic properties help relieve pain and discomfort associated with indigestion, muscle cramps, and period pain, and can reduce cough and cold symptoms when used medicinally. Like many other essential oils, Clary Sage works to help eliminate bacteria and of fungal infections.
Clary Sage has potent anti-inflammatory properties which make it useful for easing aching muscles, painful joints, strains, and sprains.
How to Use Clary Sage
Used in aromatherapy, Clary Sage Essential Oil can ease stress when it’s diffused. You can also create a blend with other mood-enhancing essential oils, like Orange, Ginger and Bergamot oils. Add two or three drops of each, with a few drops of Clary Sage, to your personal preference.
If you're feeling the strain in your muscles and joints, draw a hot bath and add Clary Sage essential oil and a carrier oil of personal preference (such as jojoba or grapeseed oil) for an aromatic, stress-relieving soak that can also help relieve insomnia – the perfect post-workout tonic. If you’re having trouble sleeping, add 3 - 4 drops to a diffuser at bedtime.
For period pains, create a massage blend to soothe cramps and pain. Just dilute five drops of Clary Sage essential oil with five drops of carrier oil, and massage it into the abdomen for relief from cramps, muscle soreness and contractions.
